i-nav: voyage optimisation and compliance in one platform

Written by Infoplaza | Sep 15, 2025 8:05:34 AM

Infoplaza introduces i-nav: a platform that combines advanced voyage optimisation with automated vessel reporting and compliance support in one integrated system. Built with input from world-leading partners and powered by Infoplaza’s weather expertise, i-nav helps shipping companies sail more efficiently, safely and in full regulatory compliance

Smarter routing with multi-objective genetic algorithms

At the core of i-nav is the TVOS routing engine. The first commercially available multi-objective genetic algorithm for the maritime industry. Developed by Theyr, The Alan Turing Institute, and the University of Southampton, this engine evaluates hundreds of thousands of potential routes per voyage. Unlike traditional or neural single-objective routing, i-nav can optimize for multiple goals at once, including:

  • Fuel savings
  • CO2 emissions
  • Just-in-Time Arrival (JITA)
  • Safety
  • Charter Party compliancy

Whilst monitoring your GHG emissions and EU ETS situation.

The result is a set of optimal routes calculated with trade-offs between possible competing objectives. Operators can select the best route based on current business needs, for example, lowest fuel use or just in time arrival.

Reliable weather data for every voyage

i-nav uses Infoplaza’s proprietary weather system, which blends multiple global forecast models using dynamic smart weighting. Forecasts are updated four times daily and include more than 50 parameters.

Key features:

  • High resolution in coastal and offshore zones
  • Real-time model verification across thousands of locations
  • Accurate data on more than 50 parameters such as; wind, wave height, current, and precipitation
  • 15+ years of marine forecasting experience

This ensures route calculations reflect real-world weather conditions throughout the voyage.

Accurate vessel modelling

To predict fuel consumption and performance accurately, i-nav integrates high fidelity vessel models that simulate behavior under varying conditions. These models include:

  • Hull shape and resistance
  • Propulsion systems and engine characteristics
  • Loading conditions (draft, trim, cargo)
  • Hydrodynamic effects from wind, waves, and currents

Event-based automated reporting

i-nav expands traditional noon reporting with event-based reporting, logging data during operational milestones such as:

  • Start/End of Sea Passage (SOSP/EOSP)
  • Maneuvering, drifting, anchor operations
  • Cargo and bunker reports
  • Special operations (e.g., dry dock in/out)

Collected data includes:

  • Navigation (position, distance, time)
  • Engine performance (RPM, load, SFOC)
  • Weather observations
  • Fuel consumption by engine type and reason
  • Remaining on board (ROB) per fuel type

Inputs can be validated against business rules and thresholds. Automation is possible via high-frequency onboard data feeds.

Built-in compliance and charter party support

i-nav includes modules for:

  • CII, MRV, and EU ETS reporting
  • Charter Party monitoring
  • Post-voyage analytics

Users can define Charter Party templates with parameters such as:

  • Agreed speed and fuel limits
  • Weather thresholds (wind, sea state)
  • Deviation triggers for alerts

Post-voyage reports compare actual performance against contractual terms, providing documentation to support claims or disputes.

i-nav in summary

i-nav brings together four key components into one platform:

  1. Multi-objective routing using genetic algorithms
  2. Infoplaza’s high-accuracy weather forecasts
  3. Dynamic vessel performance models
  4. Automated reporting and compliance tools

The result: smarter routing decisions, better fuel efficiency, and full readiness for modern environmental and commercial demands.
