North Sea weather: Calm weather in general

Written by Arjan Willemse | Jun 17, 2025 2:10:08 PM

Conditions this week appear ideal for a wide range of offshore operations. Overall, the weather will be calm. However, there are still a few important points to consider. We’ll cover them in this briefing.

High pressure is situated over southern Europe, the Azores, and a large part of the Atlantic Ocean. A small low-pressure system will develop on Tuesday north of Ireland and move across the far north of the North Sea towards Norway. Particularly in the area between the Faroe Islands and the Norwegian coast, significant wave height (Hs) will rise to around 2.5 meters, with sustained wind speeds reaching 20–25 knots. Conditions will calm down during the night into Wednesday, but another front will move across the same region during the day, causing wind and waves to increase again to similar levels.

Further south in the North Sea, high pressure dominates and conditions remain calm. In the Channel and around the Belgian and Zeeland coasts, there is a chance of fog. Later in the week, drier air will move in, and the fog risk will decrease.

From Thursday onwards, high pressure will dominate across the entire North Sea, bringing very calm weather. Hs will barely exceed 1.5 meters. However, slightly unsettled weather still may be expected near Denmark on Thursday with winds up to 20-30 knots and waves up to 2-2.7m.

In summary, the weather is expected to remain calm, providing favourable working conditions. Tuesday and Wednesday will be slightly more unsettled in the far north of the North Sea due to two passing fronts. In the far south of the North Sea, there will be a chance of fog during that time. For the rest of the week, conditions will be very calm.
