A busier North Sea makes every workable window more valuable

The North Sea is getting busier. Offshore wind continues to expand, oil and gas operations remain extensive, and new cables, interconnectors and carbon-storage projects are moving forward. Meanwhile, mature infrastructure must be maintained, repurposed or decommissioned.

All these activities require specialist vessels, experienced crews, port capacity and access to offshore infrastructure. And however advanced the technology becomes, many operations still depend on something nobody can schedule: the weather.

A broader offshore workload

The exact mix of activity differs across the North Sea, and individual project schedules continue to move. The wider direction, however, is clear: new energy infrastructure is being developed alongside substantial existing operations.

In January 2026, nine North Seas countries reaffirmed their joint ambition of reaching 300 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050. Their investment pact aims to support the installation of up to 15 GW per year during the 2030s. In the Netherlands, the Porthos project is adding another type of offshore activity: former gas wells have been converted for carbon storage, with the first CO₂ injection planned for 2027.

Meanwhile, Norway had 97 producing oil and gas fields at the end of 2025 and recorded one of its busiest development-drilling years of the past decade. In the UK, decommissioning expenditure reached a record £2.6 billion in 2025, with annual activity expected to average around £3 billion through 2032.

Together, these developments point to a broader mix of offshore work drawing on the same pool of vessels, crews, port capacity and workable conditions.
