North Sea weather: This week highest waves on Friday

A high-pressure area over the North Sea is bringing generally calm conditions. However, a low-pressure system moving east across the Norwegian Sea later this week is expected to cause higher waves on Friday. Watch our North Sea weather briefing in the video below. Figure 1: Thursday the increased westerly winds will result in wave heights between 3.0 and 4.0 meters in the northern North Sea.

High pressure dominates the North Sea, bringing calm and workable conditions over the coming days. However, occasional local fog patches in Fisher and the German Bight may temporarily hinder operations.

Conditions are expected to change during Thursday as the high-pressure system over the North Sea gradually shifts southeast and weakens. At the same time, a low-pressure area will move eastward across the Norwegian Sea. Winds are not expected to strengthen significantly, strong westerlies are likely in the northern North Sea, whereas winds in the southern part are expected to remain below 15 knots.

The increased westerly winds will result in wave heights between 3.0 and 4.0 meters in the northern North Sea. Lower waves are expected in the central North Sea, while wave heights in the southern North Sea will remain below 1.0 meter.

Over the coming weekend and into early next week, high pressure is expected to rebuild over the UK, while a low-pressure area establishes itself over northeastern Europe. This pattern will bring a northerly flow across the North Sea. It remains rather uncertain however, more unsettled weather may be expected over the entire North Sea during the weekend. Therefore it remains important to monitor the daily weather forecasts closely, as longer-term developments may differ from the current outlook.
