Calm North Sea at first, uncertain later

Calm conditions over the North Sea

A transition week: high pressure supports an early workable window over the North Sea before low pressure increasingly takes control towards the weekend, while local wind phenomena tighten conditions across the eastern Mediterranean later in the period.

Weather impact

  • North Sea: reliable workable windows early in the week, with increasing uncertainty and reduced workability towards the weekend.
  • Adriatic and Aegean Sea: local wind systems reduce operational flexibility later in the week, narrowing workable windows.

Weather situation

North Sea

A high-pressure system initially dominates the North Sea, keeping the pressure gradient weak. Across the northern and central sectors, winds remain mostly 5–15 knots with slight seas, supporting favourable offshore conditions. In the southern North Sea, a tighter gradient brings northeasterly winds of 15–25 knots during the first days.

From Friday onwards, a low-pressure system moves in from the northwest, with associated troughs crossing the basin. Winds freshen and seas build, reducing workability. Into the weekend, the low lingers, maintaining a more unsettled pattern with shorter and less reliable operational windows, particularly for offshore construction, subsea work and crew transfer.

Mediterranean: Bora and Meltemi

As the high-pressure system shifts east across central and eastern Europe, a strong pressure gradient develops over the eastern Mediterranean. Local wind phenomena such as the Bora along the Adriatic coastline and the Meltemi over the Aegean Sea may result in adverse conditions.

Along the Adriatic coast, Bora winds emerge from late Wednesday into Friday. Northeasterly winds increase to 30–45 knots with strong gusts in exposed coastal channels. Although seas remain moderate offshore, the gusty and locally severe conditions significantly constrain port operations and nearshore activities.

Further east, the same pressure pattern drives a Meltemi over the Aegean Sea towards the end of the week and into the weekend. Northerly winds strengthen to 20–30 knots, locally higher in funneled channels and between the islands. Seas build to around 1.5–2.5 meters, creating persistent and locally rough conditions that limit flexibility for ferry routes and coastal operations.

Conclusion

The North Sea offers the most reliable offshore window in the second half of this week before conditions deteriorate as low pressure takes over during the weekend. In the Mediterranean, Bora and Meltemi winds introduce localised but impactful constraints, particularly for nearshore and port operations later in the week.
