Welcome to the Weekly Weather Update – your guide to the world’s oceans and seas. Each week, we highlight key marine weather patterns and analyse unusual or significant weather events. From calm spells under high pressure to tropical cyclones forming in equatorial waters, and from jet streams steering oceanic storms to anomalies in sea-surface temperature that shape global climate patterns. Here’s what this week’s weather has in store.

The North Sea

This week, high pressure will move in and dominate the North Sea region. As a result, calm weather and favorable offshore conditions are expected. Winds will generally remain below 15–20 knots, and significant wave heights are forecast to stay under 1.5–2 meters.

At the same time, low pressure will persist over the northern Atlantic, bringing periods of slightly unsettled weather to the northern parts of the North Sea. Winds in this area may increase to around 25 knots but are not expected to exceed 30 knots. Wave heights may occasionally build to 3–4 meters (see Figure 1).

The northern Atlantic

The northern Atlantic will remain unsettled during the coming week. On Wednesday, a high-pressure system located well east of the United States will shift further east, while a low-pressure system over eastern Canada moves northeast.

Together, these systems will bring unsettled weather to the northeastern U.S. coast and the southeastern Canadian coast on Wednesday and Thursday. In these areas, offshore winds may locally increase to 35–40 knots, with wave heights building to 4.5–5 meters.

Relatively calm weather is expected from Friday. However, unsettled conditions are likely to return on Sunday and into the beginning of next week. It is recommended to monitor weather forecast updates regularly to stay informed.

Along the west coast of Ireland, conditions will be rather changeable during the coming week, with periods of unsettled weather. In particular, on Friday and Saturday, a frontal trough will slowly move eastward toward the island.

Winds are expected to increase to around 25 knots, reaching up to 35 knots well offshore. Wave heights may build to 3.5–5.5 meters, with slightly higher values possible in offshore areas.

Conclusion

The North Sea is expected to experience generally favorable weather throughout the week, with only occasional periods of slightly unsettled conditions in the northern areas.
In contrast, the northern Atlantic will remain unsettled, leading to changeable and at times rough weather along the northeastern U.S. coast, the southeastern Canadian coast, and the west coast of Ireland.

It is recommended to monitor weather reports regularly to stay safe and informed throughout the coming week.
